The Discovery Bay Lions Club is having its annual Big Cat Poker Run August 14th and 15th to raise money for local charities while touring the California Delta. Bullfrog Marina is proud to be a premier sponsor for this great cause and to help out the Lions with their fundraising efforts! There have been a lot of changes for this year’s program, which will make the Big Cat Poker Run more fun and accessible to more boaters than ever before. We at Bullfrog Marina can’t wait to see how it goes and take part in all the fun!
About The Event
The festivities start on Thursday night with the VIP Sponsor Party, where everyone who sponsored the run gets to meet, mingle and kick up our heels! Friday is the Big Cat Launch Party, starting with a lunch at the Discovery Bay Launch Area. Registration’s from 4:30-7pm, with a welcoming party running from 4:30-8:30pm. Checks and credit cards are accepted by the Lions Club, so no cash? No problem! Saturday is the Big Cat Poker Run, starting with breakfast from 7:30-9pm.
After breakfast, everyone will have a drivers’ meeting starting at 9am and then take off for a tour of the Delta along one of two routes. The short run is designated for slower boats and launches from Discovery Bay to Sugar Barge Resort. From there the boats will move on to Tower Park for lunch and then return to Discovery Bay. The long run, for faster boats, launches from Discovery Bay to Pittsburgh Yacht Club, stops at Nena’s in Stockton for lunch, and then returns to Discovery Bay’s Marina Green. This is where the poker hand draw, dinner and after-run entertainment are all happening!
The registration fee of $150 includes your poker hand, free event T-shirt and hat, admission to the Friday welcome party including food and entertainment, all meals the day of the Big Cat Poker Run and the Saturday evening party. This doesn’t include lodging, so make sure to book your hotel room in advance at the Holiday Inn Express or Hampton Inn in Brentwood.
Because the folks at the Lions Club want everyone to have a safe and fun day out on the water, and make it back in the same condition they left, there are some common-sense safety rules in place for the run. These include making sure your boat is insured, following all posted signs and no-wake regulations, not consuming alcohol during the run, and being aware of the people, boats and other objects around you. All boaters are required to stick to the routes specified for their type and speed of boat, to reduce the likelihood of accidents or getting lost. Emergency towing is available for any boats that become disabled during the run by calling Vessel Assist. Be sure to keep your radio tuned to VHF 16 or 72 to call for help if needed.
