At Lake Powell Resorts and Marinas, we have a deep respect for and commitment to the environment. With our unique location on the largest man-made lake in North America, we recognize the need to protect this rare environment where we live, work and play. We also understand that sustainability is an ever evolving practice and is not a destination.

Our Environmental Partners

We offer Canned Water for Kids in our stores which is a Wisconsin-based nonprofit providing spring water in aluminum bottles and cans, with the proceeds used to fund clean-drinking-water projects in developing nations while also reducing plastic water bottle usage.

A program where soap and left-over amenities are recycled and reused providing communities in many countries the basic tools for hygiene and the potential to decrease preventable diseases such as typhoid and dysentery.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program helps consumers and businesses choose seafood that's fished or farmed in ways that protect sea life and habitats, now and for future generations. Our recommendations indicate which seafood items are "Best Choices" or "Good Alternatives," and which ones you should "Avoid."

We are committed to environmentally sound practices that protect Lake Powell. Certification from the Clean Marine program demonstrates responsibility with recycling programs, pollution prevention, and hazardous materials.

Our Efforts

FOOD SOURCING

Increasing procurement of local, seasonal and responsibly sourced products.

  • Partner with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program and only purchase fish from the green, or occasionally the yellow list.
  • Purchase seafood from the first ISO 14001 certified seafood provider in North America in order to assure that underwater eco-system and seafood supplies are protected.
  • Source only RBsT hormone free dairy products and cage-free eggs.

EFFICIENT OPERATIONS

Controlling our energy usage.

  • Building new buildings with a sustainable building process that includes recycled plastic lumber, locally purchased steel with a high percentage of recycled steel, energy efficient doors and windows and a lake water pump sprinkler system.
  • Utilizing occupancy sensors to control power use in office areas.
  • Converting lighting to LED efficient systems.
  • Equipping houseboats with solar power options.

WATER CONSERVATION

Saving each drop.

  • Transitioned 70% of landscaping to xeriscape, which reduced water use by 38 million gallons in just one year.
  • Enhancing watershed protections in our marina management processes to ensure that water is not contaminated in our fuel operations.
  • Installed low flow shower heads.
  • Offering an ‘opt-out’ linen conservation program.

How can I help?

As a guest, please use only the water you need when showering or using the sink. Reuse your towels by hanging up after use to reduce linen laundry.


MINIMIZING WASTE

Waste is minimized throughout our operations.

  • The Lake Powell Trash Tracker program enables volunteers with the opportunity to clean up the 1,960 miles of Lake Powell’s shoreline. We provide program volunteers with five or seven days aboard a staffed and stocked houseboat. The National Park Service coordinates the volunteers for each trip. Programs averages 50,000 lbs. of trash picked up off the shores of Lake Powell each year. Find out more information at http://www.nps.gov/glca/supportyourpark/trashtracker.htm
  • Not purchasing Styrofoam for food and beverage containers.
  • Working with suppliers to minimize all shipping packaging where possible and to utilize bulk containers when feasible.
  • Providing collection containers and bins for guests to place compostables and recyclables in.

How can I help?

Secure loose items on boat decks and shores: Much of the trash in the lake has been blown off of houseboat decks and beaches by the winds at Lake Powell that can reach 70 mph.


TRANSPORTATION AND FUEL

Reduce emissions and decrease fuel consumption.

  • Working with suppliers to provide delivery optimization wherever possible in order to minimize the number of deliveries and trucks on the road.
  • Backhauling recyclables – instead of sending empty trucks back to our suppliers, they are filled with recyclable items that are dropped off at recycling centers.
  • Using electric powered carts for housekeeping operations.
